Private Investigator’s Drone Shines in Sutton Coldfield

Using a drone in private investigations

Some devices are essential for private investigators to have in their kit bag, including HD video cameras, audio recorders, and vehicle trackers. At Prometheus, we go beyond the basics, always keeping a lookout for the newest and most advanced gadgets to add to our arsenal. The newest addition is the DJI Mini 4 Pro Drone, the most recent addition to the DJI drone series, which was released in 2023.

Why Should a PI Upgrade to the DJI Mini 4 Pro Drone?

Previously, our surveillance agents successfully used the DJI Mini 2, providing valuable aerial intelligence when needed. However, with each new technological advancement comes new opportunities to improve our covert surveillance operations’ efficiency, discretion, and overall effectiveness.

With a max 20km transmission distance and omnidirectional obstacle sensing, the DJI Mini 4 Pro offers superior abilities for tracking targets through Britain’s diverse and challenging countryside

We were very keen to get the chance to put our upgraded drones to the test. Fortunately, we didn’t have to wait long.

A Detective’s Case in Sutton Park, Sutton Coldfield

Just a few weeks ago, during a one-man covert surveillance operation in Sutton Park, Sutton Coldfield, the need for eyes in the sky became apparent when our target moved into dense woodland, out of sight from ground-level observation.

The objective was to monitor and evidence the subject’s movements as part of an employee absenteeism case in which our client suspected their employee (subject) of not being truthful about the sickness they were claiming.

After about an hour of surveillance on the subject’s home address, the subject exited the building and departed in a vehicle. They were followed to Sutton Park, where they alighted the vehicle and removed from the rear a mountain bike. Our private investigator had to think fast as they knew they wouldn’t be able to keep up with the subject on foot and maintaining a long view was not feasible due to the dense woodlands that make up approximately a quarter of the land.

This is a scenario where traditional surveillance methods hit a wall, but thanks to our newly deployed DJI Mini 4 Pro, we quickly adapted. With a quick launch and discreet aerial positioning, the drone provided a live aerial feed, allowing our investigator to maintain visual contact without breaking cover. The long zoom lens meant we could continue gathering evidence seamlessly, even in an environment that would normally disrupt surveillance efforts.

Common Questions about Drone Surveillance

Will the subject see or hear the drone flying above them?
The DJI Mini 4 Pro is small, quiet, and highly discreet. When flown at a higher altitude (100+ feet), it is difficult to detect. We also position it against natural backdrops like the sky, tree lines, or buildings to minimise visibility.

What is the battery life?
With the standard battery, it can fly for up to 35 minutes, and with the Intelligent Battery Plus, between 45–50 minutes. The extended flight time allows prolonged monitoring without frequent battery swaps and enables better positioning for higher-quality footage.

Is drone surveillance legal for private investigators in the UK?
Yes, drone surveillance is legal, but we strictly adhere to UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) regulations.

What happens if the weather is bad?
DJI drones have improved wind resistance, but heavy rain, strong winds, or fog can limit their effectiveness.

How clear is the footage?
The DJI Mini 4 Pro records in 4K Ultra HD, capturing sharp, high-quality images and video. This ensures clear identification of individuals, vehicles, and activities from a safe and legal distance.

Final Verdict: A Game-Changer for Private Investigators

The DJI Mini 4 Pro proved to be an invaluable asset during our recent surveillance operation in Sutton Coldfield. When the subject moved into dense woodland on a mountain bike, traditional ground-based surveillance became impossible. However, thanks to the drone’s quick deployment and high-resolution camera, we were able to maintain visual contact.

The silent operation and advanced tracking features ensured that our presence remained undetected, while the stabilised 4K footage provided clear, actionable evidence for our investigation. This operation reinforced the critical role of drone technology in private investigations, allowing us to adapt to unexpected challenges and gather intelligence efficiently.
