A recent case highlighted just how crucial this service can be. What began as a seemingly harmless interaction on a dating app soon turned into a chilling example of obsession, delusion and escalating behaviour.
The Match That Escalated
The case began on the dating app Bumble. After a few days of chatting, our client and the man—whom we will refer to as John—exchanged numbers and continued the conversation via text. However, our client quickly noticed red flags. John was 30, lived at home, and admitted to struggling with drug use. Sensing that something was not quite right, she politely explained that she did not wish to continue any further contact.
John did not take the rejection well. He began bombarding her with messages. After being blocked on text, he turned to Instagram. When blocked there too, he moved on to Facebook. Eventually, he created a new Instagram account simply to continue contacting her. His messages became increasingly unhinged. He wrote at length, as if they had been in a long-term relationship, and insisted that he was the perfect partner for her.
Eventually, the messages stopped. For three weeks, there was silence. But it did not last.
A Disturbing Delivery
After a shift at work and collecting her child from school, our client returned home to find something deeply unsettling on her doorstep. There was an envelope with her name on it, and next to it were three unwrapped items: a bouquet of flowers and two small miscellaneous gifts that resembled items bought at a car boot sale.
Inside the envelope was a handwritten letter, scribbled on a dirty piece of paper. The tone of the letter matched John’s earlier messages—rambling, self-indulgent, and emotionally erratic. He blamed the world for his problems, claimed he had been kicked out of his family home, and expressed a bizarre desire to move in with our client and begin a new life together. The letter ended with him saying he looked forward to them working and “playing” together. He signed it with his full name, removing any doubt as to who it was from.
There was nothing in the letter to suggest this was a final message or an attempt at closure. Instead, it marked a disturbing escalation. Most concerning of all, it proved that John had somehow obtained her home address. How he managed to do so remains unknown. Turning up at the home of a single mother he had never met in person, uninvited and unannounced, indicated that this individual posed a serious threat.
Our Investigation Begins
The client contacted us immediately. Her safety and that of her child were now in question. Our priority was to assess the threat. Who was this man? Did he have a criminal history? Was he a risk? Where could he be now?
Before we began surveillance or tracing, we advised our client to report the incident to the police, install a video doorbell and inform her neighbours of the situation.
Our first stop was his last known address. There, we encountered his mother and stepfather, who both expressed serious concerns about John’s behaviour. They confirmed that police had recently removed him from the property following months of erratic and aggressive behaviour. He had refused to leave voluntarily and had only taken a few personal belongings when he finally left.
They confirmed he was a heavy user of cannabis and had no friends or active social life. This was a stark contrast to the version of himself he had presented to our client, where he claimed to be a successful business owner. His mother described him as argumentative, obsessive and someone who does not cope well with rejection. She recalled a similar situation the year before when another woman had rejected him. A letter was found in his room addressed to her, although it is unknown whether he ever sent it or attempted to act on it.
It became clear that John’s behaviour had the hallmarks of an “involuntary celibate” or “incel” mindset. Individuals who identify with this mentality often externalise blame for their romantic failures and sometimes develop deep-seated resentment towards women. While no direct threats of violence had been made, the combination of delusion, isolation and emotional instability presented a clear concern.
Exposing the Lies
Next, we investigated the business John had claimed to own. We visited the address listed on his profile, only to be told by security staff that no such company had operated there for years. We then examined his business social media presence, where he had posted photos of his supposed work with dates ranging from 2020 to 2025. We analysed the metadata from one image, which had a posted date of June 2025, and discovered it had actually been taken in 2018. Every image we checked told the same story. His entire online business persona was a fabrication.
The following evening, our client received a text from an unknown number. The message claimed to be from a friend of John’s, encouraging her to give him another chance. However, the writing style and tone were unmistakable. It was clearly John pretending to be someone else, likely using a newly purchased phone to bypass her blocks and resume contact.
Following our advice, the client responded to the message, making it clear that she was aware it was him and informing him that the police were now involved. Since sending that reply, she has received no further contact—no more texts, no more letters.
Police Involvement and Legal Action
That same evening, the police arrived for a scheduled meeting, and we attended to support our client. The officer reviewed the messages, the letter and the timeline of events. It was clear that John’s behaviour qualified as criminal harassment and stalking. Our client provided a full formal statement. As of today, a warrant has been issued for John’s arrest.
Conclusion
This case is a sobering reminder that not all threats come from people we know personally. Online interactions can escalate rapidly, particularly when someone is mentally unstable and unwilling to accept boundaries. In this instance, swift intervention, thorough investigation and a strong partnership with law enforcement have hopefully brought this ordeal to an end.
